Maui has a long history of contention over water rights, who controls them, and for what purposes. Clean water was first diverted away from local farmers and residents toward plantations and now continues to be diverted to hotels and golf courses. We can bypass the politics of this crisis with divergent thinking. By obtaining funds to supply Water-from-Air Generators to local residents as they rebuild, we hope to give them a resource to aid in returning Maui to a self-sustaining island. Securing reliable sources of clean drinking water is a critical
element needed for native Hawaiians to reclaim their ancestral land and dramatically improve their standard of living.
AWG technology (atmospheric water generators) condenses water from moisture in the air like a dehumidifier, but they also filter any toxins and pollutants out of the air. They subsequently sterilize the water collected with UV light and remove any impurities with a series of carbon, solid carbon, and reverse osmosis filters. Finally, the water passes through a filter to restore essential minerals and create a slightly alkaline PH. It is then stored and continually recirculated through a UV light to maintain purity in a tank while awaiting use.
An environmentally and socially responsible future of fresh, clean drinking water is within our grasp, one that drastically reduces the use of plastic and its carbon footprint. We imagine our homes with no pumps, no bottles, no pipes, no shipping or delivery. This technology is not dependent on any outside water source. There will be no need for gas burning trucks delivering huge plastic boxes of substandard water during emergencies.
Our 501(c) 3 nonprofit, Eye of the Needle Holistic Living, was launched after the devastating August 2023 fires. We have a 5-gallon/day unit powered by solar on our Lanai. Our lives have been enriched by having clean, fresh water at our fingertips at any time of day. It has saved us time and energy with fewer trips lugging water from the store while ensuring we stay easily hydrated every day. The financial savings have been monumental while our trash is no longer full of excess plastic waste. We feel the UV light is much more energizing than the filtered and
ionized water we were drinking before.
Our vision is to see these in all the schools across Maui… actually everywhere! Small steps of 3 gallon/day units for 1-2 people, 5-gallon/day in private homes/offices where you now see water coolers, and 2 gallon/day units in hotel rooms can change life immensely. We see expansion with 10-gallon/day units in bars and restaurants, along with Gray Water Recycling machines that
reduce water usage by 25-45%. Mid-size 58-gallon/day units can meet the needs of schools and community centers, churches, and tiny-homes-on-wheels. Larger 100-gallon/day and 200-gallon/day generators will bring immediate relief for natural disasters. And in the near future, a 5-gallon/day portable unit will be available that can be run from the back of a pickup truck on 12v! AWG technology can offer us all a brighter future in a renewed, sustainable world.

Eye of the Needle Holistic Living was founded after the fires in 2023 by Bren Taylor and David Kitts, L.Ac, Dipl. O.M. “We’re all in a tight spot and we’re all in this together. Contributing to the large community is how we get each other through the Eye of the Needle, by supporting each other.”
